What Is A Board Certified Veterinary Surgeon?
A board certified veterinary surgeon is a licensed veterinarian who has obtained intensive, additional surgical training including a year of internship, three years of residency, and has passed a certification examination by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. A veterinary surgeon may offer special assistance in the following kinds of cases:
- Traumatic injury and emergencies, such as fractures and exploratory surgery;
- Orthopedic surgeries such as cruciate ligament repair (TPLO), arthrodesis, and joint replacement;
- Soft tissue surgeries such as tumor/cancer removal and correction of congenital defects; and
- Neurological surgeries such as herniated discs and spinal injuries.
While your family veterinarian can diagnose and treat many health problems, certain diseases and conditions require the care of a doctor with specialized, intensive surgical training to provide the best outcome for your pet. Your veterinary surgeon will work closely with your family veterinarian and other specialists.
